Portable Japanese calligraphy set - bamboo leaves (incomplete)
A vintage calligraphy set enclosed in an elegant lacquer-ware style box. Lacquerware are items decorated with a natural, or in same cases, synthetic resin, as well as gold leaf, mother pearl, eggshells, and pigments. This one was manufactured in the 90s in Yamanaka region, where such lacquerware has been produced since XVIcentury.
This set is decorated by hand with both opaque and transparent resin, to resemble another traditional Japanese craft- shippo (glass enamel).
Elegant flat, circular box is decorated with golden leaf and a stylized image of a bamboo stalk and leaves. The bottom part is in a deep red shade. Inside there is a miniature calligraphy set- a small ceramic water container, small palette for preparing ink, and a brush.
The finish is a synthetic resin- during the time this set was manufactured, it was a new and trendy technology. Most of the parts, such as the handle of the brush, the box, and the palette, are made of synthetic material.
Please note, this set is incomplete- the brush is missing its bottom part. There is also some staining on the water container. Please check the photos carefully before purchasing.
Despite the flaws, the item will make an excellent interior decoration. It could be used to store your favorite brushes, inks, or watercolors. The black insert with designated spaces for the items is removable- the box can be used for different purposes.
