Miniature "shishi gashira" lion heads from Sakata Festival
A pair of wooden lion heads from Yamagata prefecture. These are a miniature copy of two guardian lions appearing during famous Sakata Matsuri, a festival established over 400yrs ago.
The heads can open their jaws. With a little skill, you could manipulate them with your hands, mimicking the traditional lion dance, said to bring good luck, prosperity, and good health.
Set of 2. Their design slightly varies. Both are made of lacquered wood. Due to their age, there are some scratches, chipped lacquer, and some other minuscule imperfections. The set comes with two flat cushions. The fabric is slightly faded.
The lions will make a great interior decoration. These can serve as castanets as well.
Size each ca 9x9x10cm
