A traditional Japanese wind chime, or fūrin, in the shape of a stone lantern, with a bell resembling a pinecone. These chimes are traditionally used during the summer - their sound is supposed to bring refreshment during the hot and humid season.

It is a nanbu ironware, a traditional cast iron item from Iwate prefecture.
The design is elegant and eye-catching. The top part is decorative; it's the bell attached below that produces the sound. Despite its small size, it produces distinctive, clear notes. The original paper strip, propelling the chime, is included.

Instead of a chain or a string, this bell hangs on a hook shaped like a monkey. A monkey reaching for a reflection of the Moon (here being one of the openings of the lantern) is a traditional and still popular motif in Japanese arts and crafts.
All the parts are detachable and can be used separately.

The paper strip is rather damaged, but can be easily substituted. Thre are some rusted spots on the top ring of the pavilion, on the bell's heart, and on its surface. Please check the photos before purchasing.
The strings are made of cotton.
